DIY Washable Baby Placemats For Clip-On Chairs

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

This free pattern for DIY wipeable baby placemat attaches to clip-on highchairs (and restaurant high chairs too!). It covers the table …and unlike baby plates, your little darling can’t throw it onto the floor.

I actually came up with this baby placemat pattern a few years back for my daughter, Elise, who is now three. The placemat works really well. Just wipe it clean or machine wash and air dry.

The mat I made for Elise still holds up, but it’s pink so I re-created it in fresh stripes for Little Man. And he’s more messy so I need two. Or maybe even three.

Liam sits in our clip high chair on our kitchen island (love the space saving!). The best thing about our clip-on highchair is the room it saves in our Chicago condo. The worst thing is that little gap between our granite countertop and my sweet little boy.

That gap means without this mat my floor on its best days looks like this, plus bananas and other assorted yummies.

My baby place mat covers the gap perfectly. I made the straps adjustable so the mat attaches to restaurant high chairs too, at least restaurants that have low tables.

Caveat: It’s not totally stuck to the table so kids can pull it up. I just wet the back a bit so that it sticks to our granite counter and is harder to pull up. And once my kids got used to having a placemat they just left it there.

Best sew up a couple for own your little messy eater.

How to make DIY baby placemats:

Cut two rectangles of laminated cotton 11″ x 14″.

Grab your grosgrain ribbon.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

Cut two pieces of 1.5″ grosgrain ribbon 8.5″ long.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

Cut four squares of 1.5″ wide VELCRO Brand Sew-On Fastener 1.5″ long each.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

Fold one end of the cut edge of the ribbon down 1/4″.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

And put a hook (scratchy) piece of the VELCRO Brand fastener on top.

Repeat on the other piece of ribbon.

Zig zag stitch around the edges. (Well, actually, you can just sew a straight stitch around the perimeter and that is good too).

Measure 4″ from the sewn edge and place a loop (soft) side piece.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

Sandwich a hook (scratchy) piece on the other side.

Sew the sandwich using a zig zag or straight stitch.

So it looks like this. The left side is the piece right side down, and the right side is the piece right side up.

Put a piece of laminated cotton right side up on the table. Place two pieces of loop (soft) side VELCRO Sew-On fastener 2″ from the sides and 2″ from the bottom edge.

Sew it down.

And it’ll look like this.

Now place this piece face down on your table.

Layer the other rectangle on top.

Time to round off the corners. Find something round like a spool of thread, or a vintage milk bottle cap lid, and put it on the corner.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

Cut the corner and repeat on the other three corners too.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

Stick the hook (scratchy) VELCRO fastener on the ribbon onto the loop (soft) VELCRO fastener on the mat.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

Start the bias tape around the mat by folding down the corner. You can see my detailed bias tape tutorial here.

Sew the bias tape down to the mat by stitching along the bias tape fold.

DIY Washable Baby Placemats Great for Clip-On Chairs free project tutorial

Fold the bias tape over and stitch it down.

Open up the VELCRO brand fasteners.

And attach it to your chair for less messy eating. Wipe it down with a wet rag or toss it in the washing machine to clean. Air dry.

Does it work on a high chair as well

Kathy Beymer

Gail, to make it work on a high chair you may need to adjust the strap length to fit your particular chair. If you figure it out, I'd love to see it! You can post a picture at facebook.com/merrimentdesign

I love this idea and congratulations on your tutorial. I did have a bit of difficulty with the white Velcro on white grosgrain, but more especially with "place Velcro 2" or 4" etc in: do you mean the edge of the Velcro should be 2 or 4" in or it should be centered at 2" etc in?

And the instruction "Stick the loop (soft) VELCRO on the ribbon onto the hook (scratchy) VELCRO on the mat" really has confused me, as the Velcro on the mat is a loop piece and the ends don't match! I'm sure I am being clueless, but could you please confirm that the ribbon strip - when laid with its unstitched end at the edge of the mat - has no Velcro pieces matching? I think because it has to have the space to loop round your clip-on chair, I probably do understand...?! Thanks

Hi Jill, thanks for reaching out and how fun that you are making the mats!

For your first question: I measured the inches from the edge of the Velcro (not the center). This may depend on your seat, though. This worked for my Phil & Ted's seat but if you have another brand you may want to adjust.

For your second question: thanks for catching that! It should say "Stick the hook (scratchy) VELCRO on the ribbon onto the loop (soft) VELCRO on the mat" - so sorry for that error! I have updated it in the post above.

Let me know if there are any other questions, and have fun!

Kathy
